Tips for Outdoor Faux Flowers

Tips for Outdoor Faux Flowers

How glorious it is to finally feel the warmth of the sunshine, and see those summer flowers bloom!  It has been a long time coming and certainly much needed.

It’s the time of year where you’re antsy to go out to the gardens and start pulling weeds and making them pretty again.  Every year I have high hopes for what I will achieve, and as the hours and days drag on and my gardens still look like a hot mess, I slowly retreat (and that’s when the excuses begin!). Too warm, don’t have time, it won’t make a difference anyway, etc.  Sometimes even mid-summer you get the urge to go round two, but it’s always the same old song and dance.

Stop whatever you’re doing and listen to me. This is not the only way!! Go with the faux.  There is simply no easier way to enjoy your gardens.  No pruning, watering, overgrowth or killing off.  They are a great option for those who truly aren’t home enough, or those that want to do it in one shot and be done for the season.

Artificial can have a bad reputation, but here are our top three pointers to reverse the stigma.

  1. Don’t put them out too early! It’s pretty obvious when it’s 5 degrees out and your hanging basket is in full bloom.
  2. If it hasn’t rained in a few weeks, take the time to hose them down to remove the dust. New growth on a live plant usually hides any dust but your artificial may collect dust throughout the summer.
  3. If they look dull and faded, throw them out! They have done their duty. You will give your trick away if your plants look raggedy, or the colour has obviously faded out of them.

AND MOST IMPORTANTLY…. when it comes time to put them away, make sure you do so properly! Hose them off and make sure they are stored nicely.  If you squish them into a box, they will look like they just came out of a box.  This is the key to preserving them and getting the most out of them that you can!
